An ovarian cyst is a formation in the form of a bubble, filled with fluid. This is the most common problem for which people consult a gynecologist.

In Finland, ovarian cyst treatment is conducted using the most gentle methods and surgery is only resorted to in extreme cases.

In the diagnosis of ovarian cysts, ultrasound, which is conducted at different phases of the menstrual cycle, plays a significant role. In mature women, a check for tumor markers is additionally conducted.

Functional cysts (follicular and corpus luteum cysts) up to 3 cm in size in young women most often do not require surgical treatment, they are simply monitored. In case the cyst does not resolve, medication treatment is used.

If the cyst is accompanied by pain syndrome and

with a menstrual cycle disorder, surgical treatment is not ruled out.

Congenital cysts and cysts of other origin (neoplasms, dermoid, cystadenoma) and cysts with various inclusions often require surgical treatment.

In Finland, cyst treatment is performed exclusively by laparoscopy. The only exceptions are giant-sized cysts, which are extremely rare.
