Ovarian cyst removal surgery

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled blister. It is the most common problem for which people seek a gynaecologist's services.

In Finland, ovarian cysts are treated with the most sparing methods possible, and surgery is only resorted to in extreme cases.

In diagnosing ovarian cysts, ultrasound examination plays a large role, which is performed at different stages of the menstrual cycle. In women of mature age, cancer markers are also checked.

Functional cysts smaller than 3 cm (follicular and corpus luteum cysts) in young women usually only require monitoring, and surgical treatment is often not necessary. However, if the cyst is associated with pain symptoms and/or menstrual disorders, surgical treatment is not ruled out. If the fluid in the cyst does not reabsorb into the tissue, medication is used.

Congenital cysts and cysts of other origins (neoplasms, dermoid, cystadenoma) and cysts containing different additions usually require surgical treatment.

In Finland, cyst surgery is only performed laparoscopically. The exception is large cysts, which are rare.
