Remote prescription renewal - briefly
Renewing a prescription means extending the validity of an expired prescription. A doctor assesses whether the medication is still suitable for you and renews the prescription so you can purchase the medicine from a pharmacy. The easiest way to renew a prescription is to submit an electronic renewal request online.
Prescription renewal: OmaKanta or Medfin?
You can send a prescription renewal request through OmaKanta if the matter is not urgent. Medfin is suitable when you want to renew a prescription within one working day.

When can a prescription be renewed online?
- You are already taking medication previously prescribed by a doctor
- The reason for using the medication has not changed
- A doctor can assess your situation remotely

The service is not intended for situations where you need to start a new treatment, receive a new diagnosis, or have an in-person doctor’s appointment.
Which prescriptions cannot be renewed remotely?
Not all prescriptions can be renewed through the online service. For patient safety reasons, prescriptions for the following medications cannot be renewed remotely:
- antibiotics
- sleeping pills
- strong painkillers
- addictive medications
How prescription renewal works
Step 1
Log in to the service and verify your identity using online banking codes
Step 2
Fill in the remote prescription renewal request
Step 3
Pay for the service by bank card through a secure connection
Step 4
Wait for a message from the doctor confirming that the prescription is ready
Step 5
Once the prescription has been renewed, it will be available in OmaKanta
Step 6
You can then buy the medication at any pharmacy
Prescription renewal price
The renewal of one prescription costs €9. No outpatient clinic fee or Kanta fee is added to the price.
You can add several prescriptions to one request. Prescription renewal of each medication costs €9.
Prescription renewal always requires a doctor’s assessment, so renewal cannot be guaranteed in all cases.
Renewal of a prescription issued more than two years ago
If more than two years have passed since your last doctor assessment, prescription renewal requires a remote or in-person doctor’s appointment.
