An extended medical certificate for a driving license is a comprehensive medical assessment of a person's ability to drive. At Medfin, the certificate is issued during an in-person doctor's appointment at our medical centre in Helsinki, near the Ruoholahti metro station.
An extended medical certificate is required if:
An extended medical certificate is intended for situations where a doctor needs to carry out a more comprehensive assessment of your health, functional capacity, medical conditions, medications and other factors that may affect your ability to drive safely. After the age of 70, these health assessments are carried out every five years.

A basic medical certificate for a driving license is sufficient in most routine situations, for example, for Group 1 drivers under the age of 70 and Group 2 drivers under the age of 68.
An extended medical certificate is required when renewing a driving license in certain age-related situations, like after the age of 68 for Group 2 driving licenses (vehicle categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE), and after the age of 70 for Group 1 driving licenses (vehicle categories AM/120, AM/121, T, A1, A2, A, B and BE).

During the examination, the doctor assesses your overall health and any factors that may affect your ability to drive safely.
During the appointment, the doctor may assess your vision, hearing, blood pressure, physical and functional capacity, medical history, current medications, the impact of chronic medical conditions on your ability to drive, and any other factors relevant to safe driving.
With your consent, the doctor may also review your health records in Kanta. This helps provide a more comprehensive assessment of your health.

You can also complete Traficom's preliminary form before your appointment.
Preliminary formMedical certificate for a driving license is saved to Kanta during the doctor's appointment. Afterwards, you can authorize Traficom or Ajovarma to access the certificate directly through Kanta. In most cases, there is no need to submit a paper copy separately.
If you wish, you can also receive a printed copy of the certificate.
If the certificate is required as part of a driving fitness assessment, you must submit it to the police yourself. We do not send medical certificates to the police.
