To obtain a medical certificate for a driver's license, you need to come in for an appointment at the clinic. The doctor will assess your health condition, including checking your hearing and vision, as well as measuring your blood pressure. Such a check-up cannot be conducted remotely. What medical certificate do you need for a driver's license?
A person applying for their first driver's license may not need a medical certificate if their own confirmation that their health and physical condition are sufficient for safe driving is enough. This only applies to Group 1 driver's licenses, including a car, motorcycle, moped, microcar, and tractor. When applying for Group 2 driver's license categories, a medical certificate is always required.
The applicant for a category 1 driver's license also needs a medical certificate in case of certain diseases. If the applicant has had or has, for example, eye diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cerebral circulation disorders, insomnia or sleep apnoea, mental or personality disorders, attention and activity disorders, intellectual disability, neurological diseases, memory disorders, dizziness, alcohol dependency, drug use, use of medicines that affect the central nervous system, or musculoskeletal diseases or other serious illnesses.
Mostly, a medical certificate for a driver's license is required in the following cases:
Group 1 (AM/120,AM/121,T, A1, A2, A, B, BE)
When applying for a driver's license
- A self-declaration of health compliance may be sufficient. You will need a medical certificate if you have a disease that affects your ability to drive.
When updating a driver's license
- A medical certificate is not required if the driver's license is renewed at the latest on the day you turn 70 years old.
- You will need an extended medical certificate of fitness to drive if you are renewing your driver's license after turning 70.
Group 2 (C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE)

- A medical certificate of driving ability is required.
When updating a driver's license
- A medical certificate confirming your fitness to drive is required if you have turned 45 by the expiration date of your driving license.
- An extended medical certificate of fitness to drive is required if you turned 68 years old before visiting a doctor to renew your driver's license.

What to bring with you for a driving suitability examination?

How long is a medical certificate for driving valid?
The certificate for obtaining a driver's license is valid for six months from the date of the doctor's visit. Therefore, don't forget to apply for a new driver's license before this deadline.

The doctor assesses the overall health condition of the visitor.
As part of a medical examination, the doctor checks, among other things, vision, hearing, blood pressure, physical and functional abilities, as well as the presence of diseases and medications taken that affect the ability to drive a car.
